You May Be A Hacker If…
- …there is dust on the top of your mouse, but your control and meta keys are wearing out.
- …you have to keep reminding yourself that C-x C-c doesn’t do anything on your friend’s computer,
and you keep wishing you had never had to learn what Alt-F4 does.
- …you are smiling right now imagining the surprise on the faces of the readers who can’t see this
line because they just tried pressing Alt-F4.
- …you are NOT smiling right now because you know that basic OS and application shortcuts are
no measure of a hacker’s skills.
- …you began enjoying this page more when you saw that I did not spell that word as “$killz”
- …you are now wondering what the value of killz is.
- …you’re pretty sure killz is being typecast as a string, and entirely sure it isn’t in C.
- …you have entirely forgotten that we were making fun of script kiddies a moment ago, and have
revived old debates within your mind on the pro’s and con’s of using $ in a language for vars.
- …you still say “string” when you read “$” aloud, and often put it at the END$ of vars by
old habit.
- …you don’t call them “vars”.
- …you secretly have a crush on Ada Lovelace or Charles Babbage.
- …you didn’t just Google “Ada Lovelace” OR “Charles Babbage”.
- …you just Scroogle’d “Ada Lovelace” AND “Charles Babbage” through Tor on port 8118.
- …you spend more time writing code than you do reading security advisories; and discover more new
viable exploits in the process than you would have if you had been reading security advisories.
- …you are grateful that this page renders so well in W3M.
- …you didn’t just Google “W3M”.
- …you just made some “improvements” to this text, and pressed ESC, :wq
- …that last line didn’t amuse you.
- …you decided this isn’t worth improving, and pressed ESC, :q!
- …you’re glad to see the other guy leave, and just hit M-x irc to tell freenode.
- …you’re pretty sure RMS wouldn’t care, actually, so you’re trying your best not to either.
- …you haven’t had to type \r in longer than you can remember.
- …this text is green.
- …(this (line (doesn’t (bother (you (other (than (that (it’s (wrong)))))))))).
- …that last line really, really bothered you.
Any of those lines apply to you? You may be a hacker. ;]
